Description:

Daniel Putnam of Sutton, Massachusetts, the son-in-law of Judge Chase, had cut masts at the mouth of Bryant Brook in the winter of 1764-65, and brought his family to Cornish the following summer. He served in the Continental Army during the Revolution and later took a leading part in town affairs. His grandson, John Lyscom Putnam (1792-1875), who married into the wealthy Sumner family of West Claremont (whose Tory founder, Squire Benjamin Sumner, built "Cupola Farm" near the Ascutney Bridge after the Revolution), became an associate judge of Sullivan County. The Putnam family still lives in the handsome brick house built in 1774 on "Cornish Plain" or "Chase Street," south of Trinity Church on Route 12-A.
