Description:
First Congregational Church 1835-36. Claremont (85 Myrtle Street at Pine).
Claremont's First Congregational Church was erected in 1835-36 to replace the old 1785 town house. Its pointed-arch windows and double-arch doorway are good conventional expressions of the Gothic Revival. The wooden bell tower, however, is by no means conventional and has long been a source of interest. Among its more unusual features are square corner turrets, crenellation, and decorative blocks with incised quatrefoils. During the 1870's, the interior of the church was remodeled and a parish house was added at the rear.
