Description:

Godfrey Cooke House ("Riverfields") 1825. West Claremont (Route 12A)
In 1779 Capt. John Cooke bought a farm and tavern on the road from Claremont to Windsor, Vermont. At his death in 1810, the property passed to his sons George and Godfrey, and Godfrey built "Riverfields" on the rich family lands. One of the state's finest Federal houses, the building has fluted pilasters, an elaborated cornice, and a delicate Palladian window and portico. The unknown builder was clearly influenced by the design books of Asher Benjamin, who lived and worked for a time in nearby Windsor.
